Premiered by ABC-TV
Tibetan spiritual thought, with its emphasis on love and compassion, has been put to its strongest test by a calculated Chinese endeavour to destroy the Tibetan Buddhist religion, language and culture.
In this intimately-styled program, Tibetan refugees alone reveal details of the imprisonment without trial of Tibetans who have demonstrated for freedom, and of their subsequent torture and sometimes, their death.
The Dalai Lama and other monks, nuns, and laymen, describe their sorrow as they have watched Tibet's wealth being plundered and the environment being damaged. They have seen the destruction of virgin old-growth forests, land being denuded, rivers silted up by clear-felling, the taking of timber, natural gas, uranium and other precious metals, as well as the slaughter of previously sacrosanct wildlife and the loss of their natural habitats.
The Plight of Tibet and the Dalai Lama also details two varying responses by Tibetans to the Chinese occupation and rule: that of the Dalai Lama who explains his philosophy of non-violent opposition, and, second, the view of Lhasang Tsering - a former and influential president of the Tibetan Youth Congress - who believes that any means are justified in order for Tibetans to reclaim their homeland.
The Plight of Tibet and the Dalai Lama was directed and produced by filmmaker and author, JOHN B MURRAY (www.johnbmurray.net) and premiered by ABC-TV in November, 2000. Given the heightened interest in the parlous state of Tibet under Chinese rule as China’s staging of the Olympic Games draws nearer, Murray Mancha Pty Ltd has re-released its program on DVD.
